ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of History, University of Kashmir, established in 1965, has emerged as a distinguished centre of teaching, research, and intellectual engagement. Over the decades, the Department has witnessed a remarkable increase in student enrolment and research activity, reflecting its growing academic reputation and relevance.

The Department offers M.A. and Ph.D. programmes in History, providing students with a strong foundation in historical inquiry, critical analysis, and interdisciplinary research. Its curriculum spans regional, national, and global themes, while continuously incorporating recent advances in historical scholarship and emerging methodological approaches. Particular emphasis is placed on Oral History, Ethnohistory, and Microhistory, enabling students to engage with diverse voices, experiences, and perspectives that enrich historical understanding.

Faculty members and research scholars actively contribute to a wide range of fields, including Kashmir and South Asian history, economic and social history, environmental history, agrarian studies, memory studies, and historical methods.
